One of my favorite destinations is Hawaii, and Maui is always at the top of my list—especially for multigenerational families.
With its beautiful beaches, wide range of activities, and something for every age, it’s a destination that truly brings everyone together.
One of the most popular areas to stay is Ka’anapali Beach, where you’ll find a variety of resorts, each offering a different experience.
Here’s my firsthand take on several resorts along Ka’anapali Beach, and the type of traveler each one is perfect for.
Iconic Maui Views: Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is known for its incredible setting at Black Rock, one of the most iconic spots on Ka’anapali Beach. It also offers a well-rounded experience that works beautifully for families.

One of the highlights is the large, oceanfront pool area, which features a waterslide and plenty of space for both kids and adults to relax and play. The resort also offers easy, direct access to one of the best swimmable stretches of beach in this area, making it ideal for families who want to alternate between pool time and the ocean without hassle. Snorkeling right off the beach near Black Rock is a memorable experience, especially for older kids.

In the evenings, the resort comes alive with the traditional cliff diving ceremony at sunset—a unique cultural moment that kids and adults alike look forward to. It’s one of those special experiences that adds a sense of place and tradition to your stay.
Best for: Travelers who appreciate scenic beauty and classic Maui experiences.
A Lively Family Favorite: Westin Maui Resort & Spa
The Westin Maui has always held a special place for me—it’s where I stayed during my honeymoon, and it continues to impress couples and families.

This resort is ideal for guests looking for a vibrant, activity-filled atmosphere. The pool complex is expansive and playful, featuring waterslides, an infinity pool, and cascading waterfalls. There are even flamingos and exotic birds on the property, which adds a fun, unique touch.
They’ve also recently added a family entertainment center, making it even more appealing for those traveling with kids.

Best for: Travelers who want an energetic resort with plenty of on-site activities.
A Cultural Experience: Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort
The Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort is truly a hidden gem for travelers who want more than just a place to sleep.
What makes this resort special is its deep connection to Hawaiian culture. Guests can participate in a variety of complimentary, hands-on activities like lei making, weaving, and Hawaiian history lessons. These experiences felt authentic and meaningful—not something you find at every resort.
👉 Tip: Activities fill up quickly, so I highly recommend reserving them as soon as you arrive.

The grounds are beautifully maintained and relaxed, with an inviting pool and direct beach access. While it doesn’t offer upscale dining or luxury amenities, it more than makes up for it with its warm, cultural atmosphere and unbeatable location.

One of my favorite parts? Being able to walk the scenic beachfront path to explore nearby resorts, restaurants, and Whaler’s Village.
Best for: Travelers who value culture, location, and a more laid-back Maui experience.
Perfect for Young Families: Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club
Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club – Ocean Villas is an excellent choice for families who want space, flexibility, and plenty of built-in entertainment—especially for longer stays or multi-generational trips.

One of the biggest advantages here is the villa-style accommodations, which feature multiple bedrooms, separate living areas, full kitchens, and in-unit laundry. It’s also incredibly convenient for preparing quick meals, snacks, or accommodating different schedules—something many families truly appreciate.

The resort’s pool complex is a standout, featuring waterfalls, winding lagoon-style pools, and a pirate ship play area complete with a splash pad and kiddie slides, making it especially fun for younger children.

There’s plenty of space for both active play and relaxing, so it works well for a range of ages.
Best for: Multi-generational families and those who want spacious accommodations, kid-friendly amenities, and the convenience of a home-away-from-home in a prime beachfront location.
Stunning Grounds & Dining: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa
The Hyatt Regency Maui is visually stunning, with lush tropical landscaping, winding pathways, and a beautifully designed pool area.
One of its most unique features? African penguins on the property, which are surprisingly entertaining to watch and a hit with both kids and adults.

Dining here is also a highlight. I had dinner at Japengo, their open-air Asian restaurant, and the combination of fresh flavors and ocean views made it a memorable experience.

One important note: while the resort is oceanfront, the beach directly in front is quite rocky.
If you’re dreaming of soft sand and easy ocean entry, you’ll want to take a short walk along Ka’anapali Beach.
Best for: Travelers who value beautiful grounds, great dining, and a polished resort experience.
Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Maui Resort
One of the biggest takeaways from this trip is that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” resort in Maui—and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
Whether you’re looking for cultural immersion, family-friendly fun, great restaurants or beautiful scenery, there’s a perfect fit for you along Ka’anapali Beach.
